The vaccine they get when they are younger starts to wear off around my sons age, but he wasn’t due for a “booster” whooping cough shot, until the following summer before 6th grade… his case was considered “mild” because he had been vaccinated, but the coughing was violent and took his breath, made him throw up, and he would cry (and he never cries!)… he was scared because he couldn’t breath and turned a bit blueish… Now just imagine a baby or a toddler getting this cough… a lot of them don’t make it, especially the babies. We were lucky… I knew something wasn’t right about this cough, at first I thought it was “croup” but it didn’t sound right… the doctor had seen whooping cough before and suspected it in my son. The “test” for it is not pleasant so that’s why doctors don’t test for it unless they are really sure… we caught it early enough that the 5-day medicine was given right away and it kept him from having the usual “100 day” cough… his cough was only bad for 2 weeks.
